I will do just about anything to feel powerful. I don’t know if I was born that way or raised in a culture that shaped me so. But I will do just about anything to feel powerful because – more than anything – I want to feel free.
In the beginning, power came with approval. If I could determine who had the power (mother, teacher, popular girls, bosses) and gain their approval, I wielded power by association. In the beginning, I didn’t think I had any power at all; I had to beg, borrow, and manipulate to obtain any sense of freedom.
I watched the world around me, and I learned attitude made a difference. People who felt entitled were often treated that way. I tried on entitlement. It was uncomfortable at first; awkward and more like a costume than a natural fit. I practiced in the mirror, “I am powerful. I am free to be who I want. I love who I am.” I practiced until I got good at acting the part. I became a “power player” in the corporate world, and I became the boss that others pleased to get their share of the power… I accomplished a certain sense of freedom as the one who made the decisions but, still, the power wasn’t ‘in’ me… it was in the garb I donned.
Then I discovered the power in Nature. The power of the trees to grow deep roots for nourishment and transform sunlight into sustenance. The power of the bees to pollinate and bring forth fruit and fruition of new plants. The power of a seed to survive fires and storms and freezing weather, waiting patiently its opportunity to emerge. The power of a foal to rise and walk within minutes of birth. I watched the power of Life as it danced between plant and animal and Earth and Sky; and I learned something.
I learned there is inherent power in being true to one’s natural instinct. I learned that power is the unlimited Source of Well-being that flows through all Life. Every person in a group has access to their own deep well of power – not just the person who is in charge. Every person can evolve and deepen into the flow of that power by being true to the inner urgings of their Soul. In the same way that a flower turns toward the sun to absorb its light, we can turn toward the Soul’s emanation of Well-being and access the power of Life.
I learned – and I am still learning – just how free I am. The biggest freedom for me is the freedom from needing anyone’s approval or being the source of anyone’s approval in order to flow within the current of All I Am. And my greatest power is my ability to flow. I am a flow-er.
I will do just about anything to feel powerful. I will shed the perceptions of my society as to what having power means. I will make the trees my heroes and the sky my teacher. I will move through each day with my ear turned inward to the quiet voice of Guidance. I will lift my arms and move my legs to align with that Guidance, and I will welcome the flow of power to and through me as I dance freely through Life.
And Power rhymes with flower.
